Cabarrus County Chapter to Receive Donation
"MOORESVILLE, N.C. (March 10, 2010) – Continuing its support of the greater Charlotte area, The Dale Jr. Foundation announced today a donation to Family Promise of Cabarrus County. An organization committed to helping low-income families achieve independence, members of Family Promise will accept the donation on March 10th, 2010 at the JR Motorsports facility in Mooresville, N.C. at 1:30 p.m.
The Dale Jr. Foundation received the donation request from Martha “Mamaw” Earnhardt, grandmother to Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kelley Earnhardt, whose close friend Roberta Patterson is on the board of trustees for Family Promise. The two met in 1952, when Patterson’s husband Elwood, helped crew Ralph Earnhardt’s famous No. 8 car at Hickory Motor Speedway.
“This is a cause that’s close to all our hearts,” Kelley Earnhardt said. “But it’s close to Mamaw, making it especially important to us. Mamaw and Roberta go back a long way and we’re happy to help a friend of the Earnhardt family. The Family Promise group is doing wonderful things, so The Dale Jr. Foundation is glad to provide them with additional support for their cause.”
Founded 20 years ago, Family Promise has served more the 250,000 people nationally (mostly children) and helped secure permanent housing for roughly 80 percent of its clients.
“It means the world to us that Dale Jr. and Kelley were thoughtful enough to offer us a donation,” said Patterson. “This is just what Family Promise needed. In a two-month period our families will move between 14 host churches, and up until now, our volunteers were transporting these family’s belongings using their personal vehicles. This new trailer is such a blessing.”
The new trailer, purchased from the local Golden Gate Trailer Company, will be used by the Cabarrus County chapter to transport the family’s possessions to the next supporting church.
Those in attendance for the trailer donation will be Kelley Earnhardt, co-owner and vice president of JR Motorsports, along with Martha Earnhardt. From Family Promise are members of the board, Roberta Patterson, Angela Orrock, Jerry Conway and Pam Smith. Media interested in attending the donation presentation at JR Motorsports may contact The Dale Jr. Foundation at 704.799.4862.

The January 2008 issue of Hallmark Magazine included a great article about Family Promise. From the origins of the Interfaith Hospitality Network, inside the hearts of the people who make up the local networks, and why Family Promise is more important than ever, the article is an excellent introduction to our mission.
